Below is part of an email I received from one of my clients:

----

I was riding w/ very fit, strong, talented people. One has a Silver and Bronze from the Worlds last year. They had a hard, steady tempo you can only get in a group. The pace is 20+% harder than you want, for hours. The natural accelerations over small rises and hills hurt, yet the leg power was there!!! I never ran out of leg. Never. I would go to the "bank" and find I could still take a "loan" out and then pay it back as well. Spectacular. This has to be the work we have put in [at the gym]. Thank you, thank you.

If FIT ever comes across cyclists who need someone to affirm that [weight training] works, I am here.

Another item: 3 guys there, 51,54,55 yours old, all showing the young kids a thing or two. Old card no longer plays. If they are there, so I can be too.

This was a note I sent John after a training camp this last week. Think ride lots, ride hard, ride fast for 3 to 5 hours a day. Who can suffer the most?
I have always lifted weights as an off season routine to help my bike racing. It never seemed to show up on the bike. Even though I can be a monster in the weight room.
I am now in the begining of year two with him of year round Olympic lifts.
It works. The power translated into the bike is consistantly a suprise and noted by many on the road.
John has also taken note of my race schedule and worked with this as well. A great coach. First race Saturday, results can only be good.

BTW, did I mention John Nguyen is really good?
